Research within the framework of regulation of electronic identification and trust services (eIDAS)

The European Commission has published a study under the regulation of electronic identification and trust services (eIDAS). This study analysed the market for electronic identification and trust services and gathered information on how to increase the uptake of these solutions among European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). A market analysis was conducted examining SMEs' perception of these solutions, with eight member states examined in more detail. Drivers and barriers to their adoption were identified, as well as the business processes in which eIDAS solutions can be used. The data obtained indicate a low level of awareness and use of eIDAS solutions among SMEs, which points to the need for awareness-raising measures. Based on this knowledge, a pilot programme was developed to engage stakeholders in raising awareness among SMEs in Europe. A set of communication tools was developed and piloted, demonstrating the specific benefits of eIDAS solutions for digitising SME processes in order to encourage SMEs to further explore these solutions. The pilot was received positively by stakeholders and it was established that the materials can be used as a basis for further development of communication tools for various sectors. In the future, SMEs should continue to be considered a key stakeholder in promoting eID and trust services.
